May 2017: The History of Jessie Knight - one of the first British Female Tattoo Artists

Cam City WI Members were treated to a hearing about one of the first British female tattoo artists – Jessie Knight at our May meeting.  

 

Art historian and lecturer at Essex University, Dr Matt Lodder was a most welcome and intriguing guest speaker who brought to life an image collection of conserved ‘artefacts’ from Jessie’s past, illustrating the times she lived in, the style of her work, aspects of her social and family life.  

 

Dr Lodder’s enthusiasm and his own style and passion for the subject and history of tattooing in general was super refreshing! Maybe some of the members are thinking hard about a tattoo they may want ;)
